Fiji Shopping, Dining & Markets

One of the highlights of visiting Fiji on vacation is exploring the different markets, shops and restaurants that dot the country. The currency of Fiji is the Fijian dollar with various paper and coin denominations (a value added tax is added to most purchases).

Like many other South Pacific Islands, there are a number of markets in Fiji where locals from Fiji villages come to sell their produce, kava and handicrafts. The Sigatoka Markets on the Coral Coast are where both Fijians and Indo-Fijians shop for their produce and will provide a great dose of Fiji culture during your holiday.

EXPERIENCING Fiji

Shopping in Fiji you will discover everything from International boutiques to small stores selling souvenirs of Fiji and handicrafts. Many stores love to barter and bargains are to be had for the savvy negotiator. Most shops open 5 days during the week (closing at 6pm at the latest) and Saturday mornings. As the shop-keepers tend to operate on Fiji time, some may open later or close earlier than their advertised times.

The main shopping areas for the Fiji Islands are located in Nadi, Suva and Lautoka. In these cities you will find extensive duty free shopping as well as a range of Fiji handicrafts and Sulus - the most popular Fijian dress for men and women.

Restaurants in Fiji range from those offering traditional Fiji food, through to Indian, Chinese and western restaurants. The pick of dining in Fiji is the lovo or deep earth ovens where meals are slowly cooked in the warm Fiji weather, giving a slightly smoky flavour.
